This project focused on identifying gaps in community engagement in research within Birmingham and Solihull. With a population of over 1.36 million, the region is diverse, with significant disparities in health and wellbeing, particularly in areas of poverty. Through a survey and small grants, the BVSC team mapped voluntary sector organisations and explored the engagement of these communities in health and social care research. The project revealed barriers such as capacity issues, especially for micro-organisations with limited resources. Despite these challenges, the engagement events brought together new voices, allowing for more inclusive discussions on community needs. The findings highlighted the importance of further strengthening community engagement in research to address health inequalities and improve outcomes across the region.
