Social care research, a relatively newer field compared to healthcare, has struggled to establish its own knowledge base. While social care practitioners have long been encouraged to use research in their work, the profession has largely relied on academic research. Recent debates focus on the complex relationship between research and practice in adult social care, with efforts to implement evidence-based policies facing criticism for insufficient investment and infrastructure. Key to this development is the integration of research into social work and allied health professions like occupational therapy. Social workers are required by professional bodies to stay updated with research and apply it in practice. The recent Charter for Social Work Research in Adult Social Care highlights the importance of research in improving practice. As funding and attention to social care research grow, it is essential that the workforce becomes research-competent, ensuring research is effectively understood and used to enhance care.
